This class will cover both 8th grade California Common Core Standards and Algebra 1 California Common Core Standards in one year. We will be mainly working from the Big Ideas Math Algebra (Purple) Book. Also we will be using the Big Ideas Math Course 3 (Blue) Book. A link below is attached to access the book.

We will be discussing cross - curricular topics this week, including how math is related to science, engineering, technology, etc. We will be watching videos on the math used in different scientific fields. Also, we will be discussing several high demand STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers with the goal of having students begin considering what courses they want to take in high school and college to prepare for a future career.
Mon: Begin test corrections. Discussion on STEM college majors and careers. Begin watching NOVA video "Treasures of the Earth - Gems" which discusses the elements found in earth and the geometry behind gems.
Tues: Field Trip to Riley Farms (if we have enough drivers)
Wed: NOVA video "Treasures of the Earth - Metals" which discusses the metals in the scientific table and the mathematics of chemical bonding.
Thurs: NOVA video "Treasures of the Earth - Power" which discusses the power found in earth and how studies in STEM fields may help humans harness the earth's power to create energy.
Fri: Test corrections due. Reflection on the many mathematic, scientific, technological and engineering topics discussed this week and how knowledge of higher level mathematics is the gateway to high demand STEM careers.
